Amtrak's first-class offering versus roomette: A travel enthusiast's perspective
As a travel reporter and train enthusiast, I recently embarked on an intriguing journey to compare Amtrak's first-class service with its roomette accommodations. The decision to splurge on a first-class ticket for a three-hour trip from Washington, DC, to New York City in September 2025, at a cost of $450, was primarily driven by curiosity and my profession. The Roomette Experience
My first journey was aboard the Amtrak Superliner, a two-story train with recently upgraded interiors. The roomette, a 23-square-foot private space, offered a comfortable and spacious experience. It featured two chairs that converted into a bunk bed and another bed that lowered from the ceiling, providing a cozy sleeping arrangement for up to two passengers. The roomette also included a closet, mirror, and a pull-out table, along with amenities like reading lights, power outlets, and room-temperature controls.
Despite the roomette's amenities, I opted to dine in the communal dining car, taking advantage of the option to eat in my private space. The meals were surprisingly tasty, with a French toast breakfast, a Caesar salad with chicken for lunch, and a three-course dinner that included Brie salad, flat iron steak, and cheesecake. The presentation of the meals was also impressive, using plates and glassware instead of plastic dishes.
The bathroom facilities in the roomette car were standard, with three small and clean bathrooms on my floor. I didn't encounter any issues with waiting in line.
